On The Ballot: Running, Libertarian for Agriculture Commissioner (NC)
Sean Haugh did not provide voters with positions on key issues covered by the 2022 Political Courage Test, despite repeated requests from Vote Smart and voters like you.
Pro-choice | Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
The only way we can limit or end abortion is to give women better choices. |
Yes | In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
No | In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
We must stop all war. By doing so we can greatly reduce the size and scope of federal government and balance the budget while cutting taxes. |
Yes | Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
I'd love to wave a magic wand and banish all corporate special interest money from elections. Just because the Supreme Court now says bribery is legal doesn't change the fact that it's still bribery. Problem is, as long as all power is centralized in DC, corporate special interests will find a way to buy that power. I'd rather see businesses have to convince individual consumers they deserve our money, not just a few legislators. |
No | Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
I oppose killing as government policy, period. That means the death penalty is the first thing that's got to go. |
No | Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes | Do you support lowering taxes as a way of promoting growth in the economy?
No | Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
The best thing we can do to help the economy grow is to vastly reduce the amount of our wealth government takes from it. Let people keep all the money they earn and they will use it to hel the economy grow far more efficiently than government can. |
No | Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
Education happens at the grassroots, with the individual student-teacher relationship, not with federal top-down one-size-fits-all initiatives. Education is exactly one of those areas where we should follow the Constitution and leave it to the states and the people. |
No | Do you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
No | Do you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production?
We need to stop corporate welfare for energy companies. The federal policy of picking winners and losers in industry stifles innovation and shields the perpetrators of the worst environmental crimes. We should completely deregulate energy, only insisting that companies must take full liability and responsibility for any acts of pollution they cause. The current regulatory model protects those who would destroy the planet for some momentary profit. |
No | Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
Yes | Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Climate science has become so politicized that sound information is hard to come by. I prefer the more tangible approach of treating pollution as the crime it is. I am unconvinced we humans have the ability to destroy the planet, but we are perfectly capable of making this planet inhospitable to human life with war and pollution. |
No | Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
Banning stuff we don't like simply doesn't work. The murder rates in cities such as Chicago and DC with strict gun control shows we have to look deeper if we want to solve the problem of gun violence. Preventing free, nonviolent people from owning firearms solves no problems, but creates plenty of new ones. |
Yes | Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
Obamacare has nothing to do with healthcare. It's straight up corporate welfare to the insurance and healthcare industries. Federal control of healthcare only drives prices up while limiting our choices. |
No | Do you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
We must stop the war on drugs and stop meddling in the affairs of other countries. Our policies have created the chaos that people want to flee. If we stopped our warlike behavior with our southern neighbors, people would have greater incentive to stay or return home to build something for themselves and their families. |
Yes | Do you support same-sex marriage?
I support marriage, period. It's not up to me or the government to dictate to consenting adults what kinds of relationships are acceptable. Who one wants to marry is one of the most intimate decisions a person can make. Government needs to get out marriage entirely. |
No | Do you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
No | Should the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
We must stop all war. Bombing and killing has solved nothing, but rather only created new more powerful enemies, armed to the teeth with our own weapons and training. Not only must we stop our direct and drone warfare worldwide, we need to immediately stop sending arms and military aid to everyone. |
Yes | Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
We need to phase out Social Security. Stop enrolling and taxing anyone under 26 for it, and allow anyone at any age to opt out now. In this and other entitlement programs, my only concern in abolishing them is that we take care not to harm those who are currently dependent on them. |

There are so many areas where the federal government should have no role beyond protecting people's rights from being violated. If we let people keep all the money they earn and stop the federal government from wasting such a large portion of our economy, the resulting prosperity would advance arts, science, education and healthcare to a far greater degree than could possibly be achieved by government.
Government should be so small that it can be funded through corporate charter fees, a few excise taxes and tariffs, and other simple means as the Constitution originally intended. We specifically need to repeal the income tax immediately. Corporate taxes are senseless because they are only passed along to consumers, so we end up paying them anyway. Inheritance taxes are particularly cruel, while capital gains taxes stifle investment and innovation. |
1. Stop all war. Not only direct warfare, but also drones, military aid, militarization of police, and any other policy that relies upon violence or killing people. 2. Stop spending more money that we have. Our debt is unsustainable. We need to get out in front of it and eliminate it as quickly as possible. I will vote against any unbalanced budget, or any increase in either government spending or the debt ceiling. 3. Provide constituent services to all North Carolinians, to help them navigate the maze of federal bureaucracy. |
